IREX Tajikistan

The Legal Education and Development (LEAD) Fellowship Program for Tajikistan provides master’s level study of law in the United States for current resident citizens of Tajikistan. The purpose of the program is to strengthen rule of law culture in Tajikistan by providing exceptional legal professionals with a broader understanding of
comparative systems of law and increased opportunities to discuss Tajik and US law.
The LEAD Program is a program of the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) of the U.S. Department of State and is implemented by ABA ROLI and IREX.Participants are selected through an open, merit-based competition.

Fellows will:

• Enroll in a fulltime Master of Laws (LL.M.) academic program for one year.
• Collaborate with an ABA ROLI mentor during the program.
• Participate in a volunteer project during the first academic year that benefits the local community.
• Take part in an internship following academic coursework.

The fellowship is fully funded and provides:

• J-1 visa support
• Round-trip travel from fellow’s home city in Tajikistan to host institution in
the United States;
• Monthly living stipend;
• Accident and sickness coverage;
• Tuition and mandatory university fees;
• Limited allowance for textbooks;
• Pre-academic English language training (if necessary);
• Alumni networking and training opportunities.

The LEAD Program is a new opportunity that provides for US graduate study in law. Applications for degree programs beginning Fall Semester 2011 will be available in October 2010. Candidates interested in applying for the program will have access to English language classesprovided by ABA ROLI in Dushanbe.
